Leadership & Governance
SAHAR Association - ('SAHAR' stands for Online Support and Listening in Hebrew) has been operating since 2000 with the goal of saving lives and providing immediate, accessible, and anonymous mental health support via the internet to people experiencing mental distress and suicidal situations.
SAHAR operates support lines via chat and WhatsApp in Hebrew and Arabic, and also operates the 'Outreach Patrol' program that actively searches for and monitors suicidal posts and emotional distress throughout the network and provides responses. In addition, we offer self-help tools: a content-rich website for self-help with referrals to mental health services, articles, research, and podcasts dealing with mental health issues. The organization continuously develops knowledge, methods, and approaches for empathetic communication adapted to the characteristics of the digital space among different populations.
SAHAR operates as part of a national support network together with authorities including welfare, health, and police to create a comprehensive and supportive eco-system for those in distress. SAHAR is a member of the "National Council for Suicide Prevention" and participates in Knesset (Israeli parliament) discussions to increase public awareness of ways to prevent suicides. In addition, SAHAR serves as an official support entity for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in Israel. SAHAR is an active partner in mental health research and also participates in research that integrates technological tools, artificial intelligence, and more.
SAHAR is the only organization in Israel specializing exclusively in online support for mental health and emotional needs. The organization's services are provided free of charge by over 450 volunteers who undergo comprehensive professional training. The volunteers meet hundreds of people in mental distress every day in the virtual space and serve as an anchor and a safe place for them to unload what's on their hearts.
