Sahar in Numbers

Established in 2000, Sahar is an Israeli non-profit organization dedicated to providing free and immediate online emotional support for people experiencing emotional distress and suicidal ideation.
Sahar is the sole organization in Israel that specializes exclusively in online support for both mental health and emotional wellbeing. Collaborating closely with law enforcement and national emergency agencies, we are considered an essential addition to formal mental health services.
We provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in Hebrew and Arabic, through a dedicated team of 250 qualified crisis volunteers, supervised by mental health professionals, who help hundreds of people daily.
In addition to our active chat helplines, Sahar operates dedicated support forums, email support, and our pioneering Online Outreach Patrol- an innovative initiative where our volunteers actively monitor and detect distress messages across social media and engage in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and suicide prevention.
Thanks to the devotion and hard work of Sahar’s volunteers, hundreds of lives in Israel have been saved. Moreover, tens of thousands of people have found significant relief in times of distress through the support provided by our online crisis volunteers.

Thank you for the kind and warm words to hold onto. You are doing a wonderful job of supporting those who feel weak and alone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reaching out and picking up those in dire need, helping them to go on. I love you very much.
I have said some very difficult things, and felt that the volunteer really saw me, more than anyone in the world ever did. It's such a good feeling, to know that there are people here, in this crazy world, without masks or interests, who genuinely care, and that they are here for us
Thanks to you, I didn’t hurt myself. You’ve really helped me out, given me faith, hope, and a sense of companionship. I hope that you will help save many more people like you saved me
Volunteer Based NPO
Since October 7th, our remarkable team of volunteer crisis counselors and shift supervisors has been tirelessly manning our chat hotlines in Hebrew and in Arabic, operating at unprecedented levels to provide vital support to Israeli citizens experiencing acute emotional distress.
All volunteers are trained experts in text-mediated counseling and crisis intervention, focusing on delivering emotional support during stressful and traumatic events.
Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we keep our workforce at full capacity to prevent volunteer exhaustion, compassion fatigue, or vicarious trauma that can contribute to an increase in turnover.
Looking ahead, we anticipate that call volumes will continue to soar as more and more Israelis reach out for help in the aftermath of the brutal attack on Israel and the war in the Gaza Strip.
Your support is crucial in ensuring we can meet the rising demand and provide immediate and effective response to those in need.
Increased Activity
Since October 7th
Hours into the disaster of October 7, we expanded our emergency helplines to be able to provide immediate response to those in need.
- We responded to over 6,000 calls in October only, a 400% increase compared to the previous year.
- We expanded our operations from 11 hours on average daily to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- We recruited and trained 80 new mental health professionals to staff our crisis helplines.
- We have begun training 100 new volunteers to staff the lines starting December 2023.
Amid the uncertainty regarding the future, Sahar continues to work around the clock, providing rapid, professional, and free-of-charge help to all in need.
